WORKING WITH ME - MAIA ANIN
You came here looking for something different.
That's exactly what I offer.
Most of the women who find me have already tried therapy. They've sat with a counsellor, tried CBT, done the work. And something still hasn't shifted - because what they're carrying isn't living in their thoughts. It's living in their body.
I work exclusively with women and birthing parents navigating the perinatal period - fertility, pregnancy, birth, and beyond - with a particular focus on trauma, grief, and loss. Every approach I use is grounded in one understanding: healing that doesn't include the nervous system is incomplete.
HOW IT WORKS
What to expect when you work with me
Free intake call — 15 to 20 minutes
We start with a free phone call. This is a chance for you to tell me a little about what you're navigating, for me to share how I work and answer your questions, and for both of us to feel whether we're a good fit. There's no pressure and no commitment required. I also complete a brief assessment to ensure my approach is clinically appropriate for what you're bringing
01
Getting started
Once you decide to go ahead, I'll send through a simple online intake form, a consent and privacy document. NDIS clients receive a service agreement at this stage.
02
Embodied therapy sessions
Sessions are offered at 60, 75, or 90 minutes, face to face on the Gold Coast or online. The approach I use in each session is responsive to you and where you are - not a fixed formula. I draw on somatic based practices, attachment theory, grief and bereavement approaches, and various psychotherapeutic and evidence based therapies, woven together depending on what the session calls for.
03
Ongoing work
This work follows your nervous system's pace, not a schedule. We build safety and stabilisation first - developing your capacity to work with what you're carrying - before moving into deeper processing and integration. The depth of healing this work can offer is directly linked to the quality of the relational container we build together over time.
04
SESSIONS FEES

Sessions are available face to face on the Gold Coast and online across Australia. I am currently unable to accept Mental Health Care Plans, but am currently working toward Medicare provider accreditation in 2026.

THE APPROACHES I DRAW ON
My work is integrative.
Below are the primary modalities and frameworks I weave together in practice
BODY-BASED MINDFULNESS
Somatic Experiencing® (SE)
An evidence-based, body-directed approach developed by Dr Peter Levine that works with the nervous system's responses to trauma. SE does not require you to revisit or retell your trauma story. Instead, it works with the body's present-moment experience to support the completion of interrupted survival responses and restore a sense of safety and regulation.
BODY-DIRECTED TRAUMA THERAPY
Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY)
An empirically validated clinical adjunct for complex and developmental trauma and treatment-resistant PTSD, developed by the Centre for Trauma and Embodiment. TCTSY integrates body-based mindfulness with trauma theory to support reconnection, re-patterning, and safety in the body. Offered within individual sessions as required.
GRIEF & BEREAVEMENT
Contemporary grief & bereavement theory
Specialist grief support drawing on current evidence in bereavement counselling, with particular expertise in perinatal grief - the grief of miscarriage, stillbirth, TFMR, infant loss, and infertility, which is among the most complex and least-supported grief experiences a person can face.
RELATIONAL PATTERNS
Attachment theory
An understanding of how early relational patterns shape a person's nervous system, their sense of safety, and their capacity to connect - and how the perinatal period can both trigger these patterns and offer an opportunity to work with them.
COMPLEMENTARY APPROACHES
Interpersonal psychotherapy, parts work & mindful self-compassion
Complementary approaches woven in as needed - supporting relationship patterns, identity, self-understanding, and the cultivation of a kinder relationship with oneself through a demanding time.
AREAS OF SPECIAL INTEREST
I work exclusively in the perinatal and reproductive mental health space.
Within that, my three core areas of specialisation are:
01
Birth trauma & developmental trauma
For women experiencing distress from traumatic birth experiences - recent or years past - and/or the resurfacing of developmental and attachment trauma during the perinatal period.
02
Perinatal grief & loss
Specialist bereavement support for women who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, TFMR, newborn loss, or infant loss - including support through subsequent pregnancy.
03
Fertility, infertility & reproductive trauma
Support for women navigating fertility challenges, IVF, reproductive health conditions, and the psychological and identity impact of the fertility journey.
04
Perinatal Therapy or Perinatal Counselling
Therapy for women and mothers. Holding a space for you as you journey through pregnancy and beyond. Offering an anchor to navigate your transition to motherhood, your changing identity, unexpected mental and emotional challenges and supporting an empowered sense of self.

"I have been having somatic based therapy sessions with Maia for quite a while. In that time, Maia has helped me find a deeper awareness of myself that due to childhood trauma, I had previously found difficult to access with other therapies I had tried. Also, her dedication, commitment, & patience has been unwavering on this journey. I highly recommend Maia as a trauma therapist and counsellor."
